After a long, long time of wanting to have a ship’s cat aboard Nakee I’ve adopted a 4-5 month old black female kitten who was rescued from the street near the Vliho Yacht Club on Lefkada Island in the Ionian.
She came to me very ill but after several visits to the local vet, is gaining weight and getting stronger every day.
Meet Leya, who is now first mate aboard Nakee.
Leya is very affectionate and playful and likes to make friends with everyone who comes aboard. It turns out she is also not afraid of loud noises like hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, the generator or even Nakee’s 110 horse power main engine. This bodes well for a life at sea! As it is winter here in Lefkada we are not doing any sailing yet, but by the time we slip the dock lines on April 1st, 2026 and head out to sea, we hope she will be very comfortable living aboard Nakee.
She mostly stays in the cockpit but has wandered down the gangway a few times and along the dock to visit some neighbours aboard their boat. I’m therefore keeping an eye on her or using a leash when she is on deck while we are moored at the dock.
