Back in Culebra

It is nice to be back in Culebra from Western Puerto Rico, after recovering from the close call I had with fire at sea.

The new Balmar XT-170 amp alternator and the new Balmar MC-618 regulator that Schaefer & Brown Marine Electricians installed for me in Puerto Real are working well so far (knock on wood), and in fact better than the identical ones they replaced, as Schaefer & Brown found that the old regulator hadn’t been properly programmed by the marine electricians in Darmouth for the LiFePo4 batteries I have on Nakee.

Yesterday I shared a rental with some new friends who are here on their yacht from the US and we had a fun time driving all over the island. We started out in a golf-cart, but when that died the rental agency upgraded us a Ford Bronco. Much of the exploring was off road, and we saw lots of big iguanas and even some peacocks!

The day before that we found a great snorkelling spot called Melones Beach, but I didn’t have my underwater camera with me. Plan to go back there again properly equipped, as the reef looked surprisingly healthy.

I’m waiting for four packages containing boat parts to arrive here on Culebra (three via UPS, one via USPS) so I will probably be here for at least another week, but when I have them in hand, I will set sail for the US Virgin Islands to explore some of the anchorages and snorkelling there, before heading further East to the BVI where friends from the UK arrive for some R&R on February 21st.
